Creating A More Sustainable Future

One log at a time

At Certainly Wood we recognise our responsibility to support the drive towards global carbon neutrality and take seriously any direct or indirect effect our operations may have on the planet.

As such, we are continuously taking steps to improve our carbon footprint and limit the adverse effects we may have on our precious environment. On this page, you will learn about our sustainability efforts thus far and how we plan to improve further.

We’re proud of what we’ve achieved...

Sustainable Firewood Choice

Certainly Wood is a leader in sustainable firewood production, pioneering kiln dried logs well before the industry regulator Woodsure mandated drying firewood to below 20% moisture content via the Ready to Burn scheme. From the outset, we recognised the environmental advantages of properly dried wood - it burns more efficiently, generates more heat, and significantly reduces harmful PM2.5 emissions compared to wet or poorly seasoned logs. Learn more about the benefits of kiln dried logs.

Our commitment to high-quality, responsibly sourced firewood has set industry standards and played a crucial role in promoting cleaner, more sustainable wood burning. As active members of organisations such as the Stove Industry Association (SIA), we have worked diligently to combat misinformation about wood burning. By engaging with The SIA and stove manufacturers, we have helped ensure that modern wood burning remains an efficient, low-carbon heating option for the future. Our involvement enables us to stay ahead of industry developments, contribute to policy discussions, and promote best practices that benefit both consumers and the environment.

Responsible Forestry:

We believe that responsible forestry is the foundation of a sustainable wood industry. Our commitment to sourcing wood from well-managed forests ensures the health of ecosystems, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of local communities. All of our firewood is sourced from sustainably managed woodlands.

We will only ever take thinnings from the chosen woodlands. The operation of woodland thinning aims to reduce the density of trees in a stand, to ensure that the quality and health of the remaining trees can be allowed to improve.

Plant a Tree:

Did you know, on average a single tree will absorb a tonne of CO2 during its lifetime? So, imagine the impact of 100 trees could have!

Our vision is to create new woodlands here in the UK, to contribute to the combat against climate change. When you place an order with us, you have the opportunity to plant a tree and help in developing these woodlands. Learn more about our tree-planting efforts.

In 2024, we planted nearly 2,000 trees! Plant a tree now.

Our Plastic Free Range

We are committed to reducing plastic usage through several initiatives aimed at minimising waste and enhancing sustainability.

Our Less Plastic Scheme has led to significant reductions, such as decreasing plastic thickness in our small plastic bags of kiln dried logs , which saves nearly 20% in plastic annually. We have redesigned our kindling boxes   to be completely plastic-free, eliminating around 3 tonnes of plastic waste each year.

Furthermore, Flamers   packaging is now entirely plastic-free, with the plastic windows previously used replaced by a cornstarch alternative, making it fully compostable.

In House Solutions:

Certainly Wood is deeply committed to sustainability, working to reduce waste and promote environmentally friendly practices at every level.

A key part of this effort is our collaboration with Wiggly Wigglers, who produce their own Bokashi bins on their farm. This powerful composting method ferments all food waste—including meat, dairy, and cooked scraps—without odor or hassle, significantly cutting down on waste and reducing the need for frequent bin collections.

At our office, we use a Bokashi bin to ensure that our food waste is transformed into nutrient-rich compost rather than ending up in landfill. This not only aligns with our mission to be as eco-friendly as possible but also supports healthier soil and a greener future. Did you know you can also add ash into your compost to add nutrients? Find out more ways to reuse your wood ash.

Forklifts & Electricity:

If you ever come to a tour of the yard, the first thing you'll probably be met with is Dave on his forklift. Our forklifts used to be diesel, which as you can imagine, let off quite a lot of emmissions.

So, last year we introduced our first electric forklift, which helps improve emmisions and reduce noise pollution. Head over to our Instagram page for the latest updates on our sustainability efforts!

Much of our electricity is also provided by our vast array of solar panels we have installed over the years, benefiting from as much solar power generation as currently possible.
